We went back to the vet today for more blood tests and to have Mona's urine sample tested/ the urine sample showed protein in her urine and her ph was off. The urine was also not nearly as concentrated as it should be. She had one blood test at 4:30, then had to eat there. Fast for 2 hours then we went back for another blood test. This would show if her kidneys were doing their job or not. So far everything is pointing towards kidney disease, but this blood test will mostly confirm that without a kidney biopsy.
To start she will need to be on a kidney disease specific food that is low protein, low phosphorous and low sodium so it is easier for the kidneys to do their job. Essential fatty acids (thank god she is already on Udo's pet essentials, the vet was really happy to hear that. EFA"s improve liver and kidney function). Its proven that Omega 3's also slow the kidney disease process. Its no wonder now that the vegetarian diet has been so good for her with its lower protein.
Now the really bad news is that this is not curable, and she will have a shortened life span. My job will be to have her as comfortable as possible, and to give her the best nutrition to prolong her time with us. We're really devastated for our dear Mona, who you all know is just the best dog around. Even during her painful and long blood tests (they couldn't get a goo vein so lots of pokes :( )her tail wagged the whole time and she showered the vet tech with kisses. So now we try and figure out everything we can possibly do to keep her here as long as possible.
I will post a picture of her tomorrow after her big haircut :)
