Naturopath

I realized that I had psoted all abotu our naturopath visit on another website but nothing on the blog. so I jsut pasted from there. We had a great experience :)

******

I am thrilled with the way Coopers appointment went today. I love the Dr ( St Albert Naturopathy clinic). Cooper saw the husband and I am seeing the wife on the 5th. We started out by going over coopers history ( in only a diaper and t shirt I might add, he manged to poop through two layers of clothes after we got there lol). So the Dr's approach is going to be a whole physiological change. Basically he explained that things like reflux, hives and eczema are our bodies overreacting to food or things in our environment. In very serious cases he would recommend blood allergy tests but he thinks we should try Cooper on a few diet improvements first before making that financial jump. ( I didn't ask the cost, but it may be something we look into if these changes don't do it for him)So first off, if Cooper wasn't already on Udo's oil he was going to recommend it. As well I was On he rig th track giving Cooper yogurt for the probiotics but unfortunately he told me that the amounts are so minute its not worth it. So instead he is on "Ultra Bifidus" now Which is a dairy free powder that i add a 1/4 tsp to his food everyday. Brodie is also on it starting today! This is from a pamphlet that he gave me with the bottle Quote:
Lactobacillus Bifidus (by the way this is the kind of bacteria in kids systems til they are 7-9 yrs old. Lactobacillus acidophilus is what 9 and over have so giving him bio best was basically not really helping lol)Anyway:Lactobacillus acidophilus produces B vitamins, increases enzymes that help digest food and decrease digestive disorders, reduces yeast infections, alleviates diarrhea, prevents bad breath, gas and bloating, reduces hypercholesterolemia, stimulates immune system and helps with liver problems. So I bought the acidophilus for Brett and I to start on as well. I got it at Vitality health for $17 for 90 capsules and you take 1-3 a day.The next thing was he made a tincture of peppermint, hops, and fennel that i add to 2 ounces of boiling water. Once its cooled I give cooper sips of it during the day. So basically he has the whole day to finish that sippy cup with 2 ounces in it. Which is no problem since he loves it! smells nice and pepperminty. thats for the gas and bloating that causes his reflux. the above pro biotic is for both the eczema and the reflux.after that we have L-Glutamine which is an amino acid that will also help repair is digestion. $11 for the bottle at Vitality that will last months. I just put a 1/4 tsp in his food once a day too.the last thing he has is still the chemomilla for the gas and bloating and he;ll stay on that before bed like he has been.I'm pretty excited about all of the above because really its a lifestyle change not just medicine. Once his digestion is all nice and repaired he won't have these big reactions to things he eats.now we get to the super interesting nutrition part. he gave me a while chart of when and what to introduce at which months of age. its a bit different form the norm but it makes sense! So things like wheat are not to be introduced til 21 months. Chicken, fish etc..not til 18 months. instead of homogenized milk Cooper will be having formula and some goats milk which is much easier to digest. the fats aren't a worry because he is getting plenty of good fats from his Udos oil everyday anyway. So this was day one. It was very easy to give him everything he needed to take and we should be seeing the eczema hopefully completely gone in about 2 weeks. I then call the Dr to just tell him how Cooper is doing and we'll make our follow up appts as necessary. I also love that everything we need i get at the health food store except for the tincture but he gave me lots.I can't wait til my appt on the 5th. I'm really really excited!

Oh and I kind of forgot the most imprtant part. The eczema and reflux is his body overreacting to foods and creating histamine (the eczema) and gas ( the reflux). So by improving and healing his digestive system the food will be broken down better and he won't have these issues. So basically if any one has eczema caused by a food raction its because the body is overreacting and your digestive system isn't doing its job, wouldn't hurt toadd some of those bacterial cultures to your diet by supplement or lots of AB culture yogurt. I ahte yogurt and am lactose intolerant so I bought the supplement for me. By improving my digestive system it may also cure my lactose intolerance. So I also bought spirulina for my morning shakes. Cooper will start on it at 12 months. Quote:
Although spirulina nourished people in Africa and America for centuries, scientists rediscovered its benefits only in this lifetime. This microalgae is 60% all-vegetable protein, rich in beta carotene, iron, vitamin B-12 and the rare essential fatty acid, GLA. It offers a striking profile of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrents. Scientific studies show remarkable health benefits. Now available in 70 countries. I'm hoping with the added iron I won't be too low to donate next week.i'm just so glad that his body can be helped by all these things already found in nature opposed to zantac and cortisone cream which is what we would be on at a regular dr.

I forgot to also add what the amino acid L-Glutamine is:Quote:
L-Glutamine assists in maintaining the proper acid/alkaline balance in the body, and is the basis of the building blocks for the synthesis of RNA and DNA. No other nutrient is as important as glutamine for gastrointestinal health. Glutamine rapidly facilitates healing and restores the health of mucous membranes inside the colon (large intestine). Unlike other amino acids that have a single nitrogen atom, glutamine contains two nitrogen atoms that enable it to transfer nitrogen and remove ammonia from body tissues, regulating blood pH and protecting the kidneys and those with peptic ulcers. Glutamine supplementation reduces stomach inflammation caused by chemotherapy and can be useful in cases of diarrhea. The body often cannot synthesize enough glutamine to heal wounds, preserve lean tissue and nourish the immune system following major surgery or physical stress. Providing supplemental glutamine avoids all of these complications, normalizes amino acid levels, speeds healing, and improves overall surgical recovery. Glutamine is also the primary source of energy for the immune system. One of the reasons that cancer patients lose lean tissue (muscle mass) is because of a depletion of glutamine. An analysis of polyps in the colon shows that they have a significantly lower glutamine content than healthy colon tissue. When our T-cell reserve (a standard measurement of immune activity) is low in glutamine the macrophage cells lose strength. But when L-glutamine is given in large doses, the immune system responds. This versatile amino acid also is a component of the important antioxidant glutathione. Glutamine can inhibit fatty buildups inside the liver and aid medical treatment of cirrhosis, and also has been used to curb the desire to drink alcohol. Cravings for sugar can be alleviated by taking L-glutamine, preferably with just a touch of non-sugar sweetener, hopefully a natural one. The National Institute of Mental Health has acknowledged glutamine's influence on sugar cravings. By preserving lean tissue, which encourages the burning of fat, this amino acid helps cleanse the body of waste products that are created by fat metabolism, thus helping achieve proper weight maintenance. Prolonged exercise causes microscopic injuries to the muscles and, for a long as two weeks after a workout, lowers body's glutamine stores. Glutamine supplements, like all amino acid supplements, should be taken on an empty stomach with no other protein sources, preferably in the morning or between meals. For peptic ulcers take 500 mg daily on an empty stomach.Sources: Many plant and animal substances contain glutamine, but cooking easily destroys it. Raw spinach and parsley are good sources. Soy proteins, milk, meats and cabbage are additional sources. Precautions: Glutamine should not be taken by persons with cirrhosis of the liver, kidney problems, Reye's syndrome, or any type of disorder that can result in an accumulation of ammonia in the blood. For such individuals, taking supplemental glutamine may only cause further damage to the body. Because L-glutamine possibly reduces sugar and alcohol cravings, it could be considered for treating recovering alcoholics. L-glutamine should be kept absolutely dry or the powder will degrade into ammonia and pyroglutamic acid.
